LIGHT WAS THERE ALL ALONG:BLOG POST 9
Series: Hearts That Trust Allah: Practical Money Wisdom Across Borders
In this final part of our series, we reflect on how Allah’s light guides us through the hardships of working abroad. Discover how to find peace in the present moment.
The End of the Tunnel
We often spend our lives waiting for the “light at the end of the tunnel.” We tell ourselves that once the bills are paid, once we return home, or once we reach a certain level of success, then we will finally feel the peace and brightness we’ve been searching for.
But as we look back over this journey—through the weight, the exhaustion, and the guilt—we realize something profound:
The light wasn’t waiting for us at the finish line. It was the very thing that kept us walking through the dark.
The Invisible Mercy
Looking back, the “light” was present in the moments we thought we wouldn’t make it. It was hidden in the small victories:
Unexpected Barakah: When a small amount of money stretched further than expected, covering an emergency you hadn’t planned for.
Borrowed Strength: The sudden energy that appeared on a day you felt you couldn’t even get out of bed.
A Distant Smile: The joy of a child’s laughter on a video call that erased hours of frustration and loneliness.
Quiet Guidance: The inner clarity that led you to make the right financial decision just in time.
Practical Wisdom for the Journey Forward
As you move forward, how do you keep this light alive?
Collect Your “Light” Moments: Keep a gratitude log—not just of big events, but of small mercies. When you look back, you’ll begin to see a trail of light you may have missed while worrying.
Be the Light for Others: Sometimes, the best way to feel the light is to give it. A kind word to a fellow worker or a small, thoughtful gift sent home reminds you that you are a source of ease—not just a source of income.
Stop Waiting for “Perfect”: Life across borders will always carry shadows. Don’t wait for a perfect life to feel peace. Find the light in the now—in the steam of your morning tea or the rhythm of your evening dhikr.
A Spiritual Reframe
Allah is An-Nur (The Light). He tells us in the Qur’an:
“Allah is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light” (2:257).
Notice the verse says “darknesses” (plural) and “light” (singular). The struggles are many, but the Source of Light is One.
You did not survive those difficult months in a foreign land simply because you were strong. You survived because Allah’s Nur was guiding your heart—even when your eyes were too tired to see it.
Closing Reflection
As I close this series and look toward the next, walk forward with the confidence of one who knows:
The One who carried you through the shadows of the past is already present in your future.
