WHEN ENOUGH FEELS EMPTY:THE ILLUSION OF MATERIAL SUFFICIENCY.
This is perhaps one of the most unsettling spaces a human being can inhabit:
To reach the summit of your material desires… only to discover you are still empty.
You obtained the degree.
Secured the six-figure salary.
Married the person you once made du‘ā for.
Bought the house.
Earned the status.
By every worldly measure, you have “enough.”
Yet in the quiet hours of the night, a hollow ache lingers within your chest.
And what makes it even heavier… is the guilt.
You feel ashamed for feeling empty.
Ungrateful for still longing.
So the emptiness becomes layered with silence and shame.
But this feeling is not a failure.
It is a diagnosis.
Our modern culture fundamentally misunderstands the human condition.
It tells us that if something feels missing, we simply need more of the dunya: more possessions, more experiences, more attention, more validation.
But the human being is not merely a body.
You are a soul (ruh) housed within a physical form.
Your body was created from the earth, so it is nourished by earthly things: food, wealth, comfort, and material provision.
But your soul was breathed into you by Allah.
And what comes from the heavens can never be fulfilled by what comes from the dirt.
Trying to fill a spiritual void with material gain is like trying to quench thirst with saltwater— the more you consume, the deeper the thirst becomes.
The Divine Anchor
Allah exposes this illusion with striking clarity:
“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children…” — Surah Al-Ḥadid (57:20)
If a life revolves around amusement, distraction, appearance, comparison, and competition, then emptiness is not accidental.
It is inevitable.
And then Allah gives us the only true formula for inner peace:
“Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” — Surah Ar-Ra‘d (13:28)
The word Allah uses is tatma’inn— a deep, settled tranquility.
And the structure of the verse carries restriction: only in the remembrance of Allah do hearts truly find rest.
There is no substitute.
No career milestone.
No relationship.
No amount of wealth or security.
Nothing can replicate that peace.
The Prophetic Redefinition of Wealth
The Prophet ﷺ completely redefined what it means to be “rich.”
“Richness is not having many possessions, but richness is the richness of the soul.” — Sahih al-Bukhari
Real wealth is internal.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ warned us about the endless appetite of the ego:
“If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would love to have two…” — Sahih al-Bukhari
This hunger never ends— unless it is anchored in something higher than the dunya.
A Mercy You Might Misunderstand
So if your “enough” still feels empty, do not panic.
This emptiness may actually be mercy.
It is Allah pulling back the curtain on the illusion of this world. Allowing you to feel the insufficiency of creation so you stop depending on it for ultimate fulfillment.
So you turn— fully, sincerely, desperately— back to the Creator.
Because you were never created for this world.
You were created for Jannah.
And nothing less than Jannah will ever fully satisfy the soul Allah placed within you.
For sure we will neva get satisfied with this Dunia 😔
